PHUSE is introducing the first-ever event-long PHUSE Hackathon, which will run alongside the breakout sessions. As well as this, the CSS will host a plenary session and two panel discussions; further details can be found below.
Event-Long Hackathon
Due to the movement within the industry, as well as the exciting restructuring of PHUSE’s Working Groups – and therefore the inclusion of more technical topics – 2020 is the year we re-introduce the Hackathon!
This Hackathon will demonstrate the capabilities of both industry-established tools and open source technologies in analysis dataset creation as well the creation of analytics (tables, figures and visualisations). For advanced users, we will demonstrate the development and validation of packages. The outputs will be shared with the PHUSE community to be used as a resource by individuals and companies to make the case for expanding the toolset available to clinical data scientists to include more open-source solutions such as R and Python. Registrants of the Hackathon will come together with other professionals from various fields, with multiple interests and skills, to work intensely on a collaborative project to aid this.

The CSS will host not one but two panel discussions this year: one on the outcome of the first-ever PHUSE/FDA Data Science Innovation Challenge, and the second on COVID-19 and lessons learned from agility during a pandemic.
Panel Discussion: Lessons Learned from Agility in a Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to operate differently at both a personal and professional level. The public health emergency has been a catalyst for new innovative and agile ways of working. In particular, clinical studies have been set up by sponsors in record time in collaboration with regulators; cross-industry groups like PHUSE have brought together experts to share knowledge and experiences with the wider community; CDISC has developed a TAUG for standards in under a month; and companies have taken new approaches to data sharing and implemented new analyses to assess the impact of the pandemic on ongoing studies.
Bringing together a cross-section of views from the FDA, pharma, CROs and SDOs, this session will discuss the new approaches we have taken, what lessons have been learned and what changes we should make in how we approach data scientist activities in the future.

Panel Discussion: Outcome of the First PHUSE/FDA Data Science Innovation Challenge: Collaborate and Innovate to Shape the Future of Healthcare

In addition to the morning discussion, PHUSE will again be partnering with the FDA to review the outcome of the first-ever PHUSE/FDA Data Science Innovation Challenge. The PHUSE community was challenged to leverage new technologies and methodologies to provide creative solutions to the following problems:
- Opioid/Substance Use Disorder
- Drug Safety Surveillance
- Approach for Predicting Drug Interactions
- This session will look to explore the technologies and methodologies proposed back in Q1 and investigate how PHUSE/the FDA can collaborate and innovate to shape the future of data science in healthcare.
