In 2021 we welcomed an incredible 2,400+ attendees from across the globe to PHUSE Single Day Events. Knowledge was shared through 72 quality presentations across the themes of the 12 SDEs held.
The virtualisation did not hinder networking – over 500 worldwide messages were sent across the platform’s group chat discussing important industry topics.
Attendees joined us from an incredible 41 countries and 365 different companies around the world! PHUSE's Single Day Events ensured knowledge was shared in each corner of the globe and was accessible to all.
During the autumn and winter months this year we held 7 SDEs, with themes ranging from programming languages to data visualisation to staying FAIR! Attendees engaged in the content, with a fantastic 157 questions asked across the autumn/winter events. And finally, we held our first-ever hybrid SDE, which was the China Autumn SDE in November.

India Autumn – 18th September
Theme: Data Visualisation in Clinical Trials
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: Cognizant, IQVIA and Sumptuous Data Sciences
Most people understand things more quickly through visual connections rather than reading. This is how data visualisation plays its part. It helps users to understand trends, outliers and patterns in the clinical data.
In this SDE, presenters explored different aspects of data visualisation in clinical trials, from introduction to use. 87.5% of attendees joined for the topics covered and appreciated the “presentations with different content and different experiences from people from different organisations”. At PHUSE, we’re pleased to connect global individuals from varying backgrounds and interests to share their knowledge and perspectives.
EMEA Autumn – 23rd September
Theme: Multilingualism in Data Science: What's Your Second Programming Language?
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: Business & Decision Life Sciences, IQVIA, mainanalytics and OCS Life Sciences
SAS has long been used as the default programming language. Open-source languages like R and Python have been prominent in the world of big data, and have received increasing attention in the PHUSE Community in recent years.
This virtual SDE deliberated programming languages of the next decade, with the aim of providing a better understanding of their value and positioning, and to hear of practical applications.
Attendees highly recommended Tim Williams’s presentation “The Languages of Knowledge Graphs” as one to watch on demand.
Americas Autumn – 14th October
Theme: Leveraging Multiple Programming Languages for Clinical Reporting
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: IQVIA
Along the same theme of programming languages, this SDE looked more specifically at the challenges faced by organisations (sponsors and vendors alike) when embarking on the journey to enable programming language flexibility for delivering the clinical data pipeline and embrace the opportunities that accompany such flexibility.
Attendees highlighted the presentation “Concurrent Use of SAS and R in Clinical Trial Reporting” by Preetham Palukuru, Merck, because “it gave a practical example of implementation of the topics others presented on during the SDE”.
China Autumn – 5th November
**Theme:**Agile Statistical Analysis in an Evolving World
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: BeiGene, dMed, Fosunpharma, IQVIA, JMP, Novartis
How can we change our mindset and build our capabilities to become more agile statistical analysts and embrace emerging challenges? Explore the presentations from this SDE to find out!
This was PHUSE’s first hybrid SDE, which welcomed 86 physical attendees and 400 virtual ones. The event included a selection of speakers presenting in person in Shanghai to both the live and the virtual audience.
EMEA Winter – 2nd December
Theme: Staying FAIR
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: IQVIA, mainanalytics
Last year at the virtual Basel SDE in September, we had some great presentations and fruitful discussions about being FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) when it comes to our data. (Access presentations from this event via the PHUSE Archive.) This year’s SDE discussed how to stay FAIR while changing and exploring new horizons.
Open source was a key topic. Katja Glass presented a news update on what is happening with open source for pharma, together with “Proprietary vs. Open Source – What’s More FAIR?” There was also an update on CDISC CORE – a CDISC open-source project – which was presented by Dmitry Kolosov.
India Winter – 4th December
Theme: Leveraging Big Data, RPA, AI, ML, Deep Learning and NLP within the Pharma Data Sciences Industry
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: Cognizant, IQVIA, Sumptuous Data Sciences, Symbiance
Pharma data is increasing day by day and includes repetitive tasks such as data cleaning, extracting and running the programs. This SDE explored certain tools and technologies that can help with these processes and ultimately enable automatically processed data ready to make decisions.
Jeyantharkumar Arunachalam, Symbiance, presented on AI techniques in “Leveraging AI Techniques in Clinical Data Submission Processes”. Attendees liked the approach and insights provided as well as usage, e-protocol and clinical trial future transformation.
Japan Winter – 10th December
Theme: Patient Centricity: The New Data Scientist Mindset
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: IQVIA
This SDE created a space where attendees could think about and understand the concept of patient centricity and discuss how clinical data scientists can contribute to developing healthcare products and services in this era.
The final Single Day Event of the year went out with a bang! This had the highest engagement score out of all the 2021 SDEs, meaning attendees were participating and interacting with the content on offer.
