What a year it has been for PHUSE Single Day Events! Five have been hosted so far throughout the EMEA, Americas and APAC regions. Thirty-five presentations, with themes ranging from the digitisation of clinical trials to moving forward after the global pandemic, have ensured our attendees are exposed to the most cutting-edge – and hottest – industry topics and technologies.
1036 attendees from across the globe, virtually and physically, have joined us so far this year, including at our first in-person Single Day Event in three years! New for 2022, PHUSE’s renowned Webinar Wednesdays have also been featuring regular SDE Hot Topic presentations to allow for this innovative content to be shared even wider.
India Spring SDE – 19 March
**Theme:**Application of Open-source Technologies in Data Science and Analytics
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: Bayer, Ephicacy, GSK, PPD, Saama Technologies
Technology is ever-expanding and it’s imperative we stay ahead and take advantage of these ground-breaking solutions for our industry problem-solving needs. This event gave attendees the tools to do just that! The agenda was dedicated to exploring R programming and Python and Julia languages for clinical trial data analysis and identifying ways open-source technology can be used for regulatory data submission.
Attendees loved the variety of topics covered, with relatable and practical case study examples. In particular, Ross Farrugia’s presentation on admiral: An ADaM Framework Solution (Using R) Named admiral (ADaM in R Asset Library).
India Summer SDE – 11 June
Theme: Virtual Trial Design, Hybrid Trials and Digital Data Collection Methodologies (Mobile Technology, Wearables, ePRO, eCPA, etc.)
Catch up: Watch on demand
Sponsored by: Bayer, Cognizant, ICON, Navitas Data Sciences, PPD, Premier Research, Saama Technologies, Syneos Health
We are in an exciting phase of medical research with the digitisation of clinical trials! Attendees of this Single Day Event heard from six presenters across the industry on the benefits and challenges of decentralised clinical trials, regulatory challenges and other areas that impact data analysis and reporting. They heard exclusive information about cutting-edge technologies and the different approaches to remote patient data collection.
A particular highlight was ‘Virtual Trials: The Cat’s Out of the Bag’, delivered by Dimpy Modak and Shivaram Nagabhushana Sharma, ICON.
“The most outstanding presentation was by Dimpy and Shivaram, which not only shared knowledge but also triggered why and how things are done. In the case of wearables, why smartwatches use green light to measure pulse rate – blood absorbs green light!” – SDE Attendee
EMEA Summer SDE (Basel) – 21 June
Theme: Embracing and Implementing the Changes in Statistical Programming Instead of Just Trying to Keep Up with Them
Catch up: View the presentation slides As this was an in-person event, on-demand recordings are not available.
Sponsored by: Janssen Research & Development, OCS Life Sciences, Roche, Teslar Consulting
This was the first in-person Single Day Event since 2019 – and it well and truly ensured our physical SDEs came back with a bang! Networking opportunities, direct discussions with panel members and face-to-face interaction with the presenters all contributed to creating an informal, relaxed atmosphere perfect for sharing thoughts and getting to know new people.
Presentations discussed embracing and implementing the changes in statistical programming and, most importantly, how to not only adapt to the changes but how to drive them, too. Attendees listened to eight topics from mindset changes to welcoming new tools and technologies. The day concluded with a panel discussion, where the audience could engage in direct Q&A with the presenters.
Americas Summer SDE (Spring House) – 21 July

Challenges faced in the pandemic facilitated creative thinking and the need to rapidly adopt agile frameworks for data management. The morning and afternoon sessions of the Spring House SDE covered eight topics ranging from mindset changes with COVID challenges, agile methodologies, data collection and analysis to the creation of TFLs with AI-based tools and effective communication.
Attendees got a real feel for the goal of automation and the sense that the industry is united in working towards this. They thoroughly enjoyed the direct interaction with presenters and networking opportunities throughout the breaks.
“I enjoyed everything about the SDE, from the range of presenters to the diverse topics and content. And to top it all off, having the opportunity to network within the industry” – SDE Attendee
